Sunday, May 15th Denver Jazz Club Session to Feature Neil Bridge 7+ with Karen Lee (1:30-5pm) at Westminster Elks Club

On Sunday, May 15th, you’re in for a real treat – The Neil Bridge 7+ and Karen Lee. They will perform from 2 until 5pm at the Westminster Elks Club. Neil Bridge is a classic American jazz musician, who has accompanied Mel Torme, Anita O’Day, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Staton, Johnny Smith, the Mills Brothers, Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt and many more. He was a pianist with the Denver Symphony, and performed with Henry Mancini, Richard Hayman, Steve Allen, Rich Little and Nelson Riddle. This nine piece band consists of Neil Bridge, piano, Adolph Mares, bass, Larry “LT” Thompson, drums, Derek Banach, trumpet, Al Hermann, trombone, Eric Erhardt, reeds, and Karen Lee, vocals. All the musical arrangements for The Neil Bridge 7+ are written by Neil himself.

The UCD Claim Jumpers will perform from 1:30 until 2pm, and the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars will perform at approximately 3:50pm. This will be the DJC Youth All-Stars’ final Club performance before they leave for Sacramento.

Annual Ron Cope Fundraiser with the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra on Sunday, April 17th (1:30-5pm, Westminster Elks Lodge)

On Sunday, April 17th be sure to attend the Denver Jazz Club Session at the Westminster Elks Lodge from 1:30 until 5:00pm! It’s the annual Ron Cope Scholarship Benefit featuring the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra. It’s a nine piece big band that specializes in swing, dance music, and big band jazz, at home with music for dancers and listeners, playing everything from R & B to Sinatra. The Ron Cope Scholarship, named for the late pianist and founder of the Hot Tomatoes, Ron Cope (who also led the UCD Claim Jumpers), the Denver Jazz Club is happy to continue this tradition each year with one of Denver’s most popular bands (donating their performance)!  The Claim Jumpers will perform until 2pm, followed by the Hot Tomatoes for the duration of the day. The Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars will perform an abbreviated set around 4pm. It will be a wonderful day of jazz, so don’t miss it! See you on April 17th!!

THE DJC YOUTH ALL-STARS ARE LOOKING FOR DEDICATED HIGH SCHOOL TENOR SAX, TRUMPET, TROMBONE, GUITAR, PIANO, BASS OR TUBA, AND DRUM SET PLAYERS

We have 6 players graduating this year, so we’re looking for replacement high school musicians to take their spots.

WHEN WILL AUDITIONS TAKE PLACE? Sundays (6:30-9pm), April 10th and 17th, at the Flesher-Hinton Music Store Warehouse (3936 Tennyson St. in Denver).

WHAT EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED? Intermediate to advanced jazz experience is preferred.

MONTHLY CLINICIANS: Retired UC-Denver Music Professor Bill Clark, tuba player/leader of the Queen City Jazz Band, is a regular clinician. Additional professional jazz musicians will be doing clinics from time to time as well.

REHEARSALS: Weekly rehearsals take place at Flesher-Hinton Music Store, from 6:30 until 9:00 pm, each Sunday. Some holiday weekends and a few other Sundays may need to be skipped.

PERFORMANCE GIGS? We feature this all star-band during each monthly Denver Jazz Club session, professional jazz festivals, and performance gigs throughout the area. The Youth All-Stars will be performing at the 2016 Sacramento, Evergreen and Summit Jazz Festivals! They are also taking a performance tour to New Orleans at the beginning of August. We are hoping to perform in Europe during the summer of 2017.

SCHOOL CONFLICTS? No performances or rehearsals conflict with school activities.

COST: Each selected student will be required to become a member of the Denver Jazz Club ($10 yearly fee). The monthly dues (4 weekly sessions) run $140, and are payable at the start of each month.

WILL PAID GIGS REDUCE FUTURE TRIP COSTS? Any money the band is paid will go towards future trip expenses.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE? The Denver Jazz Club does have financial assistance available for students who need help with monthly dues and/or private jazz lessons.
