Annual Ron Cope Rent Party Fundraiser with the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra on Sunday, April 15th (1:30-5pm, Westminster Elks Lodge)

On Sunday, April 15th be sure to attend the Denver Jazz Club Session at the Westminster Elks Lodge from 1:30 until 5:00pm! It’s the annual Ron Cope Scholarship Benefit featuring the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra. They are a nine piece big band that specializes in swing, dance music, and big band jazz, at home with music for dancers and listeners, playing everything from R & B to Sinatra. The Ron Cope Scholarship, named for the late pianist and founder of the Hot Tomatoes, Ron Cope (who also led the UCD Claim Jumpers), the Denver Jazz Club is happy to continue this tradition each year with one of Denver’s most popular bands (donating their performance)!  

The Claim Jumpers will perform until 2pm, followed by the Hot Tomatoes for the duration of the day. The Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars and Claim Jumpers will alternate sets from 4 until 5pm, ending with a jam session, performed by both bands together!! It will be a wonderful day of jazz, so don’t miss it! See you on April 15th!!

WHEN WILL AUDITIONS TAKE PLACE? Sunday, April 15th (6:30-9pm), at Denver Percussion (7399 S. Tucson Way, Suite B2, Centennial), and additional Sundays until all positions are filled.
 
WHAT EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED? Some jazz experience is preferred, but not necessary.
 
MONTHLY CLINICIANS: Retired UC-Denver Music Professor Bill Clark, tuba player/leader of the Queen City Jazz Band, is a regular clinician. Additional professional jazz musicians do clinics from time to time as well.
 
REHEARSALS: Weekly rehearsals take place at Denver Percussion, from 6:30 until 9:00 pm, each Sunday. Some rehearsals will take place earlier on Sundays, when necessary.
 
PERFORMANCE GIGS? We feature our band during each monthly Denver Jazz Club session, professional jazz festivals, and performance gigs throughout the area. The Youth All-Stars will be performing at the 2018 Evergreen, Denver Vintage, and Sacramento, California Hot Jazz Jubilee Festivals!
 
SCHOOL CONFLICTS? No performances or rehearsals conflict with school activities.
 
COST: Each selected student will be required to become a member of the Denver Jazz Club ($10 yearly fee). The monthly dues (4 weekly sessions) run $140, and are payable at the start of each month. Due to the invitation to perform in the 2018 Sacramento, California Hot Jazz Jubilee, over Labor Day Weekend (8/31/18-9/3/18), each selected student will need to pay their $274 airfare as soon as possible, so the plane tickets can be ordered at this lower fare. The remaining balance of the trip ($331) will be prorated monthly, through July (meals and hotel).
 
WILL PAID GIGS REDUCE FUTURE TRIP COSTS? Starting on August 1st, any money the band is paid will go towards future trip expenses.

The March 18th Denver Jazz Club Session to Feature the Crystal Swing Band

Be sure to attend the Sunday, March 18th Denver Jazz Club Session at the Westminster Elks Lodge from 1:30 until 5:00pm! The Crystal Swing Band will be the featured performance group. They play music of the big band era: Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Harry James and others. Current band members include Kristin Anderson-Bohan, drums, leader; Jenny Schulte, bass; Eric Leonard, piano; Chaz Bowles, trumpet/vocals; Rex Spease, alto sax; and Eric McGregor, tenor sax.

They are fantastic, so don’t miss it! There will also be a performance by the UC Denver Claim Jumpers at 1:30pm.
