Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles to be Featured at the January 15th Denver Jazz Club Session

The very entertaining Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles will be featured at the Sunday, January 15th Denver Jazz Club Session, from 1:30 to 5pm, at Westminster Elks Lodge. This Denver based vintage jazz band is dedicated to revitalizing swing music and dance. They play big band swing from the late 30’s and early 40’s. Their influences include Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Louis Armstrong, Lucky Millinder  and Jimmie Lunceford. Trumpet player and vocalist Joe Smith started the band in January of 2013 to give dancers live music to swing out to. Come see what the younger generation of swing dancers have been hip to for the last four years! They were a big hit for the club last year!!

The UC Denver Claim Jumpers perform starting at 1:30pm, followed by sets played by the Spicy Pickles.

Poudre River Irregulars to be Featured on Sunday, November 20th at the Westminster Elks Lodge

The Poudre River Irregulars will be playing New Orleans and Dixieland jazz for the DJC in November. Noted for their exuberant energy and sound musicianship, they draw much of their inspiration from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, but play a wide variety of traditional jazz, from ragtime through the classics of the twenties and thirties up to early swing. Whatever they play, their music is always upbeat and joyful. Founder Bob Cooke retired in 2010, and the band’s current “regular irregulars” include leader Len Kellogg, trombone; Dave Dale, bass; Oscar DeZoto, drums; Ray Leake, piano; Charlie Smith and/or Larry Lagerberg, trumpet; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Clark Burnside, clarinet.

Where, when, how much: Denver Jazz Club, 2:00–5:00 PM Sunday, November 20 (UCD Claim Jumpers play at 1:30PM). • Westminster Elks Club, 3850 Elk Drive • Admission is $8 for members of any jazz club, $10 for anyone who isn’t a jazz club member, free for age 12 and younger.
